If Higher Ed Doesn’t Adapt, It Will Be Ripe For Disruption

Taken from: Tom Goldenberg, LinkedIn.

My wife Jess is a university professor with degrees from prestigious schools, including Wellesley and Johns Hopkins. I, on the other hand, completed my undergraduate degree online, after taking more than 9 years to finish! But until recently, we have earned nearly the same salary.

I don’t mean to say that my wife’s education is useless. I feel admiration and envy when I meet someone who has a Harvard MBA or a Yale law degree. These institutions bring value; in fact, I applied to Columbia’s MBA program 2 ½ years ago. Columbia rejected my application and I instead attended Dev Bootcamp, a non-accredited software engineering program, for $18,000. In hindsight, it’s clear to me that I made the right decision.

The ROI of a higher ed degree is dropping rapidly. Demand for enrollment in American universities is at an all-time high as students across the globe compete for seats at top schools. This, in turn, allows colleges to raise costs. New graduates are often disappointed with the lack of opportunity awaiting them and the strong possibility they will be burdened by student debt. This situation has led some to reconsider whether a 4-year university is the best way to prepare for a successful career.

I have heard several arguments for attending a liberal arts college over a non-accredited boot camp. Here is my summary:

  • Graduates of liberal arts programs think critically about the world, rather than being pigeon-holed into a specific field.
  • Colleges have access to resources that are out of reach to the general public, making them necessary.
  • Non-accredited boot camps don’t give enough time for their students to understand a subject or prepare them for the real world. Read More...
